Social change action with informed and engaged societies
As of March 15 2025, The Communication Initiative (The CI) platform is operating at a reduced level, with no new content being posted to the global website and registration/login functions disabled. (La Iniciativa de Comunicación, or CILA, will keep running.) While many interactive functions are no longer available, The CI platform remains open for public use, with all content accessible and searchable until the end of 2025.

Please note that some links within our knowledge summaries may be broken due to changes in external websites. The denial of access to the USAID website has, for instance, left many links broken. We can only hope that these valuable resources will be made available again soon. In the meantime, our summaries may help you by gleaning key insights from those resources.

Hi all,

I'll be teaching a course on communication for social change this fall and am working on the course reading list. I'd welcome any suggestions of good scholarly articles and other resources to add.

Thank you!

Dear Yvonne MacPherson,

Greetings from Centre for Coastal Environmental Conservation (CCEC)!

I will send an email to you but feel to write the points how Community led or Group Approached SME brought changes  better living with incresed income in the society, the Sundarbans resource dependent community.

Noted the organization CCEC Bangladesh has a little experience to set SMEs on mangrove based SMEs by involving Sundarbans Resource Dependent Community in the beginning of 2014 and shifted to Community-led Individual scheme in 2017 with the following principles;

1. Make the process Community-led by establishing Group and Association.

2. Encourage them for individual savings (BDT 100/month/person/family).

3. Ownership is given to the community by opening the bank account  in their name for example" Climate Resilient Kalikabari Sundarban Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group in Mongla under Bagerhat district and  Climate Resilient Sutarkhali Sundarban Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group in Dacope UPZ under Khulna district

4. Open Bank Account jointly operated by the Climate Resilient Sundarbans Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group  representative (leader/secretary) of the group & Representatives (Executive Committee Member/Director of the organization.

5. Both the savings by the beneficiaries and project support is being rotating as SME/individual scheme with the community led application, verification by the project team and disburse the money for business scheme for a period of 10 months with interests following "Community led Business Promotion Process/Model by CCEC".

6. Empower the women with small scale project support for example; vegetable growing, livestock rearing (hen, duck, goat).

7. Livestock training for the women in cooperation with UPZ livestock offices.

8. By now 13 groups ( 7 in Dacope and 6 in Mongla) have raised SME/Group funds about 25 -26 lacs of their own and operating the funds in cycles through different business with group decision.

I recently taught a Linguistic Anthro course on Technology and Social Change.  I used a number of readings on truth, alt media and impacts on society.  Are you interested in this category?  Could you post some of the readings you are likely to be using?

Thanks,

Hi Yvonne,

Below is a book on Behaviour Change, but I found it useful also to approach social change.

I hope it is useful for you.

I think the answer to Yvonne's question depends on the level of knowledge that her students may already have.

I have been teaching a post-grad course to communication students on Communication for Development and Social Change.  These students have a background in communcation ie information, social media and public relations but do not have much knowledge of other communication functions such as participatory communcation, research to policy communication and so on.  This leads me to use basic textbooks like the one that Paolo Mefalopolus put together for the World Bank - The Development Communication Sourcebook already mentioned and (no surprise here) I use the book that Ricardo Ramirez and I wrote called, Communication for Another Development, LIstening before Telling (Zed Books 2009).  The point being I felt the class needed to begin with a broader view of the different communication functions leading to the communication planning process.

Hope this helps- already a lot of good source books have been mentioned so you should be fine - good luck

Dear Yvonne,

Sounds interesting with your course. I published the book ‘Communication and Social Change – A Citizen Perspective’ last year with Polity. It seeks to rethink the field of communication for social change, discussing how social movements of recent years, as well as social media developments, are influencing the theory and practice of the field. I review how both NGOs, social movements and large UN agencies such as UNICEF approach communication for social change, arguing that if communication for social change is about seeking profound and sustained social change, it requires a ‘citizen perspective’ at the core of the communicative approach.

I can send you an email on a series of other books and articles you may find interesting.

All best,

Greetings Yvonne,

A grounding in S.E.E.D. S.C.A.L.E would be a great area to start understanding the necessary conditions for change

SEED is an acronym for  Self Evaluation for Effective Decision making.

SCALE is an acronym for

Systems for Communities to Adapt Learning and Expand.

There are Four Principles of SEED-SCALE which you can research and discuss

It is really worth seeking this out if you have not already done so

All the very best

Bill
