Community led SME for Social Change
Dear Yvonne MacPherson,
Greetings from Centre for Coastal Environmental Conservation (CCEC)!
I will send an email to you but feel to write the points how Community led or Group Approached SME brought changes better living with incresed income in the society, the Sundarbans resource dependent community.
Noted the organization CCEC Bangladesh has a little experience to set SMEs on mangrove based SMEs by involving Sundarbans Resource Dependent Community in the beginning of 2014 and shifted to Community-led Individual scheme in 2017 with the following principles;
1. Make the process Community-led by establishing Group and Association.
2. Encourage them for individual savings (BDT 100/month/person/family).
3. Ownership is given to the community by opening the bank account in their name for example" Climate Resilient Kalikabari Sundarban Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group in Mongla under Bagerhat district and Climate Resilient Sutarkhali Sundarban Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group in Dacope UPZ under Khulna district
4. Open Bank Account jointly operated by the Climate Resilient Sundarbans Bawali-Mawali-Jellay Group representative (leader/secretary) of the group & Representatives (Executive Committee Member/Director of the organization.
5. Both the savings by the beneficiaries and project support is being rotating as SME/individual scheme with the community led application, verification by the project team and disburse the money for business scheme for a period of 10 months with interests following "Community led Business Promotion Process/Model by CCEC".
6. Empower the women with small scale project support for example; vegetable growing, livestock rearing (hen, duck, goat).
7. Livestock training for the women in cooperation with UPZ livestock offices.
8. By now 13 groups ( 7 in Dacope and 6 in Mongla) have raised SME/Group funds about 25 -26 lacs of their own and operating the funds in cycles through different business with group decision.

Social Change: Source Book and Lessons
Dear Yvonne,
I am presently teaching a related course at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and I found Development Communication Source Book, published by the World Bank very useful. Another book that I found relevant is Mohammed Kuta Yahaya's Communication for Social Change: Lessons from Social Engineering Process.
I hope you find them useful.
Communication for Social Change
Hi Yvonne. You might find Les Robinson's materials useful. His book Changeology is a good starting point. Best of luck with your teaching. Nicola
Depends on the community
It depends on the community in which you want to target. If it is underdeveloped community the tricks might be different. Like in Nepal, community radio programs are more effective to change the society. The models of radio praograms also differ from society to society.
for the general ideas World Bank publication Development Communication Source book is helpful

Greetings Yvonne,
A grounding in S.E.E.D. S.C.A.L.E would be a great area to start understanding the necessary conditions for change
SEED is an acronym for Self Evaluation for Effective Decision making.
SCALE is an acronym for
Systems for Communities to Adapt Learning and Expand.
There are Four Principles of SEED-SCALE which you can research and discuss
It is really worth seeking this out if you have not already done so
All the very best
