Social change action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This award is designed to recognise library-based services that empower women and girls through information and communication technology (ICT), and is offered by the Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) with support from a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This Innovation Award is the fifth call in EIFL-PLIP's innovation awards programme for public and community libraries in developing and transition countries. Libraries offering an innovative service that uses ICT are invited to enter the competition to win US$1,500.

According to EIFL-PLIP, public and community libraries present a huge opportunity to increase ICT access for women and girls. Known and trusted institutions, libraries can help address the social, cultural, and economic reasons why women and girls are excluded. Close to communities, they can make access to ICT more affordable, convenient, and secure for women and girls. Trained librarians can build confidence and skills so that women and girls overcome inhibitions about using technology. They can promote ICT to women and girls so that they understand its value and use it to improve their lives.
